Helping those around us

A few weeks ago I started a Bible study by Beth Moore on the book of James. It's called Mercy Triumphs.
I've really been hit hard about the part that talks about remembering the poor and caring for those in need.

It's actually pretty easy to start feeling guilty for everything that we have been blessed when we think of other people who were born into different situations where they might not be able to find food every day. I like how Beth Moore addresses these thoughts. She says, "Guilt is useless. Giving is priceless."

Take a look at James 1:27 - "Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world." (The Message)

Also check out James 2:14-17, "My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don't do anything to show that you really do have faith? Can that kind of faith save you? If you know someone who doesn't have any clothes or food, you shouldn't just say, "I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat." What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help? Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!" (CEV)

So how can you reach out to the homeless or those in need this week? I'm challenging myself to buy something to donate to our local food pantry each time I shop for groceries for myself.

And Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!

  1. What a great post- I really enjoyed reading it. And you are right, we need to do anything we can to help others. I am going to challenge myself to put togther house hold items to donate to the womens shelter near me.

  2. Sounds like a great read. I need to make a note of this study. I did the Breaking Free study with some women at my church. It was so good and so intense! =)
